Car buying tips
When you first arrive and you don’t speak a word of Spanish buying a car can be a pretty daunting task. Speaking Spanish or finding someone who will help you will make buying a car a lot easier but it is still possible without it.

Second hand car prices here are a lot more than in the UK and Europe, unless you are really lucky you will not be able to get a real bargain, be prepared to pay a bit more than you thought you were going to. Also factor in 100-200€ in buying costs (trespaso) to pay all the fees and taxes.

Here are a few suggestions to make your purchase a bit easier.

Buying a car
1.    Beware of being ripped off – as in all countries second hand car dealers can be a bit shady, however if you are careful you should be OK. Here are a few bits of advice to follow that will help you avoid buying a duff car.
a.    Don’t buy an ex-rental car. They are usually clocked and won’t last long, even if they have low mileage and look in good condition don’t go near them. Seat Ibizas, Renault Clios are the most common and are sold via garages.
b.    Be careful of ex-commercial vehicles – small vans and Renault Kangoo type vehicles. If they have been used commercially they will have a TARA number painted on the side. Usually they have been flogged to death, overloaded with cement and won’t last you a year.
c.    Beware of cars owned by surfers or windsurfers, check for rust, the sea air in Gran Canaria is pretty brutal

Places to buy a car
1.    The Internet –  segundamano.com and elbaul.es both have pretty good lists of cars and they are mostly private sellers and they can be cheaper. Shop around though, people put whatever price they want and you will often find second hand cars more expensive than new ones! Also have a look at our second car section for English speakers.

2.    Garages – the biggest ones are in
a.    El Carrizal (just south of the airport). You can find pretty much anything here, except really cheap cars, and most come with a year's guarantee. There are loads of garages here and all display their cars on the street.
b.    Tamaraceite (the other side of the road from Siete Palmas)

3.    The street
a.    Al Campo in Telde, there are often cars near McDonalds
b.    The roundabout at the top of Sonnenland – there are usually cars from English or German sellers.

c. El Faro 2 - every Sunday there is a market behind El Faro 2 and there are a few cars there

4.    The paper
a.    El Baúl has the biggest selection but La Provincia, Canarias7 often have cars too.
b.    The Canary News – the free English newspaper in the South has a classified section, where all the sellers will be English speaking.

c. Tips and info - sometimes has ads for cars

5.    Asking around – Every summer loads of teachers leave Gran Canaria and want to sell their cars, ask people in the British schools.

My recommendation is have a good look at segundamano.com and see wat you can get for your money, decide what car you want and then have a look at the cars in Segundamano and in the garages in El Carrizal. At the same time have a look in El Baul and ask around. Be patient though. There are deals to be had but they won't be so easy to find. If you have any secret tips  or find any other places that sell cars please leave a comment below, all future car buyers will be very grateful.

Thanks for the information.

Thanks for the information. You also need for an insurance as you buy the car. Car insurance is insurance purchased for cars, trucks, motorcycles, and other road vehicles. Its primary use is to provide financial protection against physical damage or bodily injury resulting from traffic collisions and against liability that could also arise therefrom. The specific terms of vehicle insurance vary with legal regulations in each region. To a lesser degree vehicle insurance may additionally offer financial protection against theft of the vehicle and possibly damage to the vehicle, sustained from things other than traffic collisions. car insurance is really important since there are a lot of car accidents because of drunk driving.

Buying a cheap car :) How/where.

Heya all :)
Buying a used car in G.C. can be a bit stressfull , but fun too :) The market for second hand cars is HUGE.Now depends on your wallet starting from option nr.1 the best to nr.4 - the poorest :
1 : LAS PALMAS/VECINDARIO/PLAYA DE INGLES: All makes licensed dealers.New cars with 5 or 7 year warranty and 2 hand cars with minimum.12 months warranty.Prices for brand new cars range from round 10.000,-Euro and up.Check out the Porsche dealer in Las Palmas and Mercedes in Vecindario! - NICE ;)Also werry nice costumer service at FORD/Renault dealers maspalomas.
These licensed dealers do all the work for you from start to finish regarding payment/papers and provide a perfekt customer service ass well as follow up after the purchase of the new vehicle :)

2 : All kinds of 2 hand car dealers all ower the island ! "HOLA!Special price for you my friend" - better 2 hand cars for sale but also former rental cars found here.If you are lucky , you will get some kind of a 12 month limited warranty and maybee some kind of a nice costumer service ;)But be carefull - you can end up buying total scrap for more money than the car is worth! Bring with you a god Canarian friend to help you doing the deal !!! He/she will be able to see things you do not even think about ! :)

3 : Private: (secundamano.es / el baul - paper) and small garages runned by Englisch/Spanisch/Scandinavian or German owners. All over Playa de Ingles and South El-tablero to Puerto Rico. Here you will find the cheapest deals but do not expect much and no warranty here.If you need an old banger to run arround from Puerto Rico to Mogan in a short period of time , you will finde cars here for 1000,-Euro or less.Old Fiat Pandas and so on ranging from 400,- to 1000,- euros in ok running condition and papers ok.But make shure to use a gestoria to make the paper-transfer buying a car and DO not trust anyone saying that they will take care of it for you withinn 14 days if you buy and pay the car today !! YOU WILL BE CHEATED !!

4: The cheapest cars are often missing the possibility to transfer the papers to your name. However it is possible to buy and insure these cars too ;)! If you buy a car cheap and get the green card (paperwork) following the car , you can be shure the car is not stolen. The problem is , that in order to change the owner of a car in G.C. BOTH the buyer and sealer have to meet in the gestoria to present there signature and residencia ! Many times the former owner of a car has left the island for good selling the car cheap just befor leaving ! That resoults in a car that will be in his name ALWAYS untill it gets scraped or left somewhere to die (that is why you will se many abandoned cars arround the island just standing there under a palm tree to die a slow death !) But as long you have the green card following the car , it does not mather if the car is in someone elses name , as long it is legally insured ! Some insurance agents insure the car on the I.D.number only and they do not care who ownes the car ! ;) So if you get pulled ower for a police controll you simply say that you "borrow" the car from a friend (the friend whos name is on the green card), but that you pay the insurance - simple.HOWEVER that solution only works for you if you do not expect to sale the car again. Some small garages and dealers can make you a werry good offer on one of these cars and buing it back for a bit less later , when you are done using it.You will also finde privat people/small garages/cardealers who rent cheap cars on monthly bases starting from round 250,-euros/month and up.Ask for them in local bars/restaurants in the south (English/Irish bars in Purto Rico or Arguineguin is the best place to ask for these a bit "unleagal" long therm carrentals. However make shure the rental car is fully isured and clame to see the insurance papers before driving. If you run down someone in an un-insured car , you will be facing jale for a loooong time and a huge fine !!Some people make a bit of money byuing 2 hand cars and renting them out to others.Just ask arround for them. Take care and good luck buying a car ;) vrooooooommmmm !!
