Hi
Recently moved here and looking for a company who can get us English TV programmes.
Not sure what we want, sky / canal + etc. so would like some advice too.
What are other ex-pats watching? what package do you have? is it worth it?
Would love to hear from the expats who have this in their homes, and any pitfalls etc.
Thanks.

Yes Richard -thank you When madscott says you only need to have a good aerial he is talking about Freeview you can get a box from Carrefour for additional Spanish stations much the same as you can for extra stations in UK for when the analogue signal is switched off. However Free to Air is different and requires a dish and I think a big one as you say.Even then I am unsure what it would pick up in this location due to the high sides of the valley at Mogan. In UK i use 3 internet -a chinese company in Hong Kong based in Uk at Glasgow 5Gb a month £15 a month. Can only use UK services at very high rates. So the options in GC appear to be for mobile internet Moviestar (telefonica) and Vodaphone -a Uk modem I don't think works in GC and you have to buy a local one and for unlimited monthly useage costs about 39euro a month for either. I am unsure if this requires an annual contract or whether one can buy complete months -that I would prefer as I intend to remain UK resident initially so will not be in GC every month. I have not detected any other ISP's ha-it seems they need more competition !!!-but it seems mobile internet plus one of the American channels is relatively easy to set up whilst investigating further the possibility of accessing via a Free to Air receiver and satellite dish.

Is an alternative to sign up to one of these packages from American companies for one off charge and plug into your TV using mobile internet from Carrefour?
TV in Gran Canaria
Which package from American companies? And the mobile internet from Carrefour probably won't be fast enough to watch TV.
I use Lamnia to fool the outside world that I am from the UK and then connect my TV to the PC and watch the BBC iPlayer ITVplayer etc. full screen on a 32" TV and it is perfectly fine. If you are planning to use Hulu to watch American TV be aware that you won't be able to access it from here.
Anyway let us know which American TV package you're talking about and I'll look into it.
TV in Gran Canaria
Thank-you Richard. I doing advance planning as not moving in until end of month. I do like to use Hotbird 13E and that gives me TVE Bloomberg in English that I use most of all in UK plus Italian and German stations and others. If I can get access to UK BBC too that will do me fine together with local spanish stations. In UK I use a 10" notebook on 3 mobile internet and I use free to air box from technomate and I have a spare one to bring out. Now madscott tells me I only need a good aerial to pick up Hotbird 13E to my free to air box to TV but others I have spoken to say I need a dish. I am rather confused as to my best and most economical option. There are a multitude of American internet TV providers. I looked at satellitedirect.tv but I find it all unclear ! -hence appreciate your .interest
Watching TV in Gran Canaria
Hi,
you won't be able to access the BBC via cable, you will need a satellite dish and a big one too. Regarding the stations you can access free on cable - you get about 30 stations, all Spanish + a couple of English ones like the Sony channel and Disney channel. The last time I looked there was certainly no Bloomberg, Reuters CNN English etc. I know you can access some channels free via satellite but I can't tell you what they are (the last time I looked into it they were pretty poor channels - but they may have changed). However you can of course use one of the American options you mentioned and a 3G mobile internet card. 3G is very good here and you'll probably be OK. I've never used one of these services so I can't comment. As I said before we use Lamnia to access teh BBC, ITV, Channel 4 players and it works brilliantly - on a 10" screen it'll be almost like watching TV.
Hope this helps, Richard
Satellites, cables ...
Have a look at this page, http://grancanariaguru.com/watch-uk-tv-gran-canaria it has a couple of useful telephone numbers of specialists who may be able to help, richard

English TV-Mogan
Thank-you madscott for reply. My brother tells me no problem Hotbird 13E as high in sky but it might depend on size of dish ?
english tv
No dish required, only a decent aerial
MOGAN VILLAGE
I would be pleased if someone could advise on my options here -I think I might have restricted satellite availablity so I will not get Hotbird stations like TVE Bloomberg etc. What can I get. Altenatively is cable available -any idea of cost. In UK I use a free to air bought from Technomate in East London -and have a spare one -might that work. I suspect would need large disc to get anything. Responses would be much appreciated

As i´ve written earlier, without spending any money you can watch numerous channels in English with a freeview box. Here are a list of the channels we watch, not every programme can be changed but the majority can. TVE1, TVE2, clan, sony, la sexta, cuatro, telecinco, FDF, siete, disney, Antenna 3, neox, nova. The reception will depend on how good your aeriel is

Freeview
Just in case some people don't know, if you don't want the expense of getting canal plus or sky you can buy a freeview box for under 40 euros and watch at least 12 spanish channels that broadcast shows in the original version, lots of movies and documentaries for example. If you like football there are at least 6 matches live every weekend including 2 premiership games although the commentary is in spanish but you don't have a commentator when you go to a game so to me that's not really important. One of the channels is sony entertainment which is almost exclusively english. What you need to do is find the "audio" button on the remote, press this whilst watching a channel and if it offers you the chance to change it away from spanish, take it and after that the box will remember to change anything to english automatically from then on. The amount of channels you'll receive are down to how good your aerial is, personally we have 31 channels of which we can change 12 to "version original" Among the programmes we watch are Desperate housewives, lost, CSI, Will & Grace, Becker, Married with children, Criminal minds, Dexter and many others. Going back to football, on a Monday night one of the channels (I can't remember which) gives a full round up of all the premiership matches from the weekend including every goal scored, hope this helps
Thank you for your very
Thank you for your very useful information. Any idea where in PDI I could get a freeview box?
Freeview box
Hi, not sure about PDI. you could try the electronic shops in the Yumbo Centre, if not Carrefour in the Centro Atlantico in Vecindario will have one.
Freeview box
Don't buy any electronics in PDI, best bet is carrefour in atlantico like Richard says, if you have a car you could price the boxes in there and then drive up to media markt at las terrazas and compare, I have 2 in my apartment, the most recent one was from carrefour and was 36 euros and is also a region free dvd player with usb input so altogether is fantastic value for money
www.englishtv.plus.es
Hello Folks - I saw this advert in Island Connections newspaper. The website seems impressive and the deal looks good. Does anyone have any knowledge of this company and its ability to provide TV in Gran Canaria?
englishtv.plus
Hi, the advert is essentially for the Spanish Canal Plus so it won't have Sky, BBC, ITV etc. It will have the major American networks Fox, NBC etc. and all the American / English speaking programmes will be available in English. The sport is very good however the premiership is already available on freeview here. The commentary is usually in Spanish but some matches you can get English commentary too.
Hope this helps,
Richard
TV
Hi Richard - thank you for your reply. The website seems to suggest more choice than you suggest. Do you know anyone who has this system?
Kindest Regards
Canal Plus
Hi, just had a look at the website - I forgot to mention it also has loads of movie channels and children's channels too. The Sky news channel I think is the same one you get on freeview in the UK, same with BBC news. I do know someone with the system and hopefully he'll put a reply on the forum in the next couple of days. Have you looked into getting a sky satellite? They are more expensive to set up but the monthly fee is comparable to the canal plus standard fee.
Cable TV in GC
Hi, there are a few options for cable TV here. Have a look at this page for some basic info and links - http://www.grancanariaguru.com/gran_canaria_telephone . Cable TV doesn't have BBC or SKY or any British channels but it has American channels such as FOX and many programmes in English. The sport is excellent too but with Spanish commentary. Hope this helps.
SKY in Gran Canaria
Hi, you can get SKY here in GC. A friend of ours has it in the north of the Island in Teror. The dish, box and initial set up cost €700. They did it through a German guy called Chris. His mobile is 685622043.

Hey, I have heard from a friend there who had an english package through Sky and also if you sign up to orange you can get free UK calls from GC!
