January 09

my name is william and i am from glasgow. I am looking to relocate to gran can in january 09. i am basically looking for any advice i can get. I have a HND Supporting and managing learning needs and wondering if there would be jobs available to suit my current experience. I have worked in a special needs school for over 4 years. although I would like a job related to my qualifications I am willing to take any job availabe to begin with. aswell as wondering about job opportunities, i am also concerned about how difficult it might be to find a flat share on the island.

If any1 has any advice and help for me please reply or email me wull19@hotmail.com

Special needs teaching

Hi William, I'd give all the English schools on the island a ring - the list is on the website and see if they have anything available. There are also teaching assistant jobs available in the state sector - just email trevordoble@yahoo.com for more info. Otherwise contact Angela at the Job Centre (number on jobs page) for other jobs. rregarding flat share, there are often rooms available in the South and if you ask around at the schools in the north you can often find rooms in Las Palmas too.

good luck.

regarding relocation to gran canaria

EHR Just would like to find out if there are many jobs on the island for building services engineers And roughly what do they earn? I am a qualified Gas Engineer/plumbingHeating Engineer and can work on all types of gas ,are there any facilities management companies there in GC,like daren i am also corgi registered and i have 22 years experience in my field .I am educated to nvq4 level and belong to a few engineering institutions at Engineering Technician Level. And Licientiate level also are these qualification recognised in Spain.I do speak a little spanish although it would need polishing up, I have three young children that will be coming with me they are bilingual (spanish) ps their mother is from Gc.But mainly this question is about me I'm british. any feed back would be Gladly appreciated.

1. There are facilities

1. There are facilities management companies here. They are not like the UK though, there are less of them and they tend to be a part of a larger company. Santana Cazorla servicios is an example you can find their details on the internet.

2. Gas and heating engineers are not in high demand here. There are not many gas installations and not much heating either.

3. There is work for plumbing, but at the moment there is not much work for anybody in the construction industry.

To be honest finding a job in the construction sector here at the moment is tricky, as a maintenance engineer it may be a bit easier but you will need Spanish. An example of an installation company that may be able to help you out is www.grupoctl.com, they do plumbing and gas installations and may be able to point you in the direction of a company that is looking for workers.

I would recommend speaking to as many companies as possible to see if there is work or give the job centre a call 928779837 - ask for Angela. She should be able to help you out or at least point you in the right direction.

Good luck with the job hunting and let us know how you get on

Your own business in Gran Canaria

Run your own business part-time and enjoy plenty of free time to relax or look after the family.
Our proven sexy toys vending activity is a mature business (established 16 years ago) and we are looking for a business person to take the business model and run the same business for themselves in Gran Canaria (or even Fuerteventura, Lanzarote, or the mainland or Balearic resorts).
Our business works very well in Tenerife and we would like to share our success with others who are looking for a low-risk easy-to-run business, with no need to rent business premises or employ staff. If you are leaving the UK for a new life in Spain, this could be ideal for you - especially if you don´t want to run a bar, café or a shop.
No experience is required, all vending machines, stock, spare parts and support is supplied.
You may want to come and see the business operating in Tenerife in order to feel more comfortable with the proposal. We shall be very happy to explain everything to you and show you how simple it is to start running your own business in Spain.
If you would like to ask any questions, email me direct on tom.paterson@patersondominguez.com

Hi, good luck with your move

Hi, good luck in your move to Gran Canaria.
I'm hoping to move at the start of the season next year, as its easier
to get work, and a decent place to stay. I'm a bit scared as i'll be
doing it alone, so keep us updated how you get along with finding a job
and accommodation! :)

Bar jobs

unlikely you'll get a job out here without being here. Most bar jobs in
the south are given to people who walk in off the street and are
available to start immediately. Come out here on holiday and just go
around all the bars and speak to all the owners until you get a job.

Any advice appreciated!! :)

Hi guys,
I am new to this and would really appreciate any direction available. At present my move to Gran Canaria is work in progress - not going fast enough for my liking but anyhow - I have my house on the market back here in Ireland and until this makes shape I cant really commit to anything else.
I am hoping to move to the south of the island and am trying to source a job within an office environment - I am qualified in finance but would consider any type of admin work. I am currently studying the spanish language and am due to commence level 4 next few weeks - although going to class once a week wouldnt compare to living in a spanish speaking country - so I am very anxious to get a move on.
If anyone could guide me in the right direction or give me any leads on the job front I would be very grateful.
I will be making the move with my 13yr old son and would like some advice/info on schools in the south - I was contemplating the British school but the fees are a bit steep to be paying every month as initially I will have to rent accommodation also which will absorb a good part of any income.
Sorry for the rant !!
Thanks guys
wee c

Seeking work

I have 26 years experience in the plumbing and heating industry and am now looking for a change of pace in life and relocating to a sunny climate appeals to me and my family.I am a corgi registered gas engineer of 14 years and also a qualified electrician.I have also ran a busy kitchen fitting business for the last 8 years. Would anyone know of how to relocate to gran canaria and would my skills be of any use to the island?

Work in Gran Canaria

Hi Darren, there is work here but to get regular work you will need to
put in the footwork, speaking to people and getting yourself known and
once you get a reputation you won't be short of work. It may take a
long time until you get regular work though as the building industry
here is currently going through a bit of a crisis, 30% of building
firms in GC have closed in the last 6 months. As there is no mains gas
here you probably won't be able to get gas fitting work however. If you
really want to move to the Canary Islands my suggestion would be to
come out here on a cheap holiday and just speak to as many people as
you can in the south. You never know, you may bump into a builder who
really needs a decent kitchen fitter.

CARER NVQ2

HI, WE ARE THINKING OF TURNING OUR BACK ON ENGLAND AND MAKING A NEW LIFE FOR OURSELVES AND OUR 20YR OLD DAUGHTER IN PUERTO RICO, CAN ANYONE TELL ME IF THEY HAVE ANY CARE HOMES FOR THE ELDERLY AND WHAT SORT OF MONEY WOULD IT BRING IN.

THANKS
JANET

Care homes

There are care homes here - they are called "hogar de ancianos" unfortunately I have no idea how much they charge or pay their staff but I know they're not nearly as expensive as in the UK. They also have home help here too. Here is a link to a home help company in the north of the island. If you email them they may be able to help.

here is a link to three care homes on the island including one in San Agustin in the south, again if you email them they may be able to help. Good luck
