Gran Canaria is getting more and more big names, like Bruce Springsteen, flying out to play and we expect even more now that the government has dropped the tax rate on cultural events to a paltry 3%.
Gran Canaria music acts
Recent acts include Bruce Springsteen and Ricky Martin, and Elton John isn’t far of signing for summer 2017. Aerosmith play the Canary Islands in summer 2017 but chose Tenerife rather than Gran Canaria (must be an age thing). Kool and the Gang play in December 2016.
In the past, we’ve had Jamiroquai, Shakira, Bryan Adams, Elton John and Keane along with Spanish singers liked Mana, Amaral, Nicky Jam and Manu Chao. Both Julio Iglesias and Enrique Iglesias have also both performed in Gran Canaria in recent years. Let’s not forget past concerts by Van Morrison, Boney M, Chuck Berry, The Waterboys, Bucks Fizz and even Jason Donovan and Peter Andre.
Gran Canaria music concerts & venues
Most big concerts in Gran Canaria are in the capital Las Palmas. This is because it’s where most of the locals live and where the biggest venues are. However, smaller acts often play concerts in Vecindario and Telde, while the vintage pop acts choose south Gran Canaria.
Exceptions include the big annual Maspalomas Costa Canaria Soul Festival on San Agustín beach, the annual Gay Pride concerts in Playa del Inglés and the BioAgaete festival in Puerto de las Nieves every summer.
Stadium acts tend to play the football stadium in Siete palmas (less than 5 euros in a taxi from the bus stations), while smaller acts play venues like the Cicca.
It’s easy enough to get a bus up from the resorts to Las Palmas for a concert and either stay over for a night or get a bus back. Four people sharing a taxi to Playa del Inglés costs less than 15 euros per person.
Classical Music Concerts
These concerts are performed throughout the year and are mostly in Las Palmas and Telde. They are of varying quality from world renowned orchestras to local groups. The famous ones tend to sell out very quickly so make sure you book early.
The best concerts tend to take place as part od the Canary Islands Classical Music Festival which is on during January and February. there are concerts all over the island although the main venues are the Las Palmas Auditorium and the Expomeloneras Congress Centre in Meloneras.
